This attractive print originates from: The Tresor de Fables…. (The Treasure of Fables, chosen from the most excellent mythologists), Brussel, 1734. This French edition will be followed, in 1739-1740, by a Dutch rhymed version, published in three volumes: Den Schat der Fabelen, gekozen uyt de voornaemste Verdigt-schryvers. The fables were based on the moralistic fables of Aesopos. In the book were 114 engraved plates of these fables. Ref: Cohen 996

Made by ‘Jean Laurent Krafft’ after ‘Marcus Gheeraerts’. Jean Laurent (Johannes, Joannes, Johan, or Jan, and Laurentius, Laurens, or, sometimes, Lodewijk) Krafft, (1694-1768). He is an Flemish engraver and a rhetorician, writing in Dutch and French. Marcus Gerards (Bruges, ca. 1521-probably London, ca. 1590) mainly made a name for himself in Bruges with his city plan, which he drew and painted in 1561-1562 and, whether or not engraved on copper himself, on behalf of the city council. He was versatile in painting figures, landscapes and buildings. Gerards was also versatile in the techniques: painting on canvas, drawing, etching and illumination of books. In 1567 a richly illustrated book was published by printer Pieter De Clerck in Bruges under the title De warachtighe fabulen der Dieren. Marcus Gerards supplied 108 engravings, almost always occupying a full page. Gerards acted as publisher himself.
