Early lithograph of dead Napoleon Bonaparte laid on his field bed.

Made by Charles Joseph Hullmandel after Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848).

Medium: Crayon style lithograph on hand laid (verge type) paper.

Sheet size: 35 x 28.5 cm (13.78 x 11.22 inch). Image size: 31.5 x 24.5 cm. (12.4 x 9.65 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Creasing in left and top part of print. Overall browning. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Marryat was stationed on St Helena from 1820. He was able to view, and draw, Napoleon’s body shortly after the Emperor’s death on 5 May 1821. Several prints after Marryat’s drawing were made shortly thereafter.

Biography engraver: Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) was an English lithographer from London. He was important in the development of British lithography and he wrote an important handbook.
