The Hague: Christiaan van Lom, 1724. Folio: [x], 672, 235, [xxv] pp. Full leather. Contemporary full calf with 6 raised bands, gilt decoration and a title ticket to the spine. Gilt board edges.
Artists and Engravers: Author(s): Christophre Butkens. Christophorus (Christophre/Christophe) Butkens (Antwerp, 1590-1650, the Hague) was a Cistercian abbot of the Sint-Salvator congregation in Antwerp. He is mainly remembered as historian an genealogist, who created his own system of hatching, causing confusion with the already extant systems. Engravers: mostly anonymous; the frontispiece, by M. Borrekens after Abraham van Diepenbeke; emblem on title page by D. Coster; portrait on dedication page of Francois-Philippe. Prince de Rubempre et d’Everberghe by D. Coster after G. Cortens; portrait of Butkens by Jacobus Harrewijn after Abraham van Diepenbeke.
Condition: Good, given age. Complete. A few pages including the portrait of Butkens, with a stain at bottom. Front and rear hinges firmly attached. Some scratches on the boards and edges. The spine damaged.
Medium: An engraved frontispiece portrait, an engraved folding map of Brabant in 1421 and numerous engraved text illutrations (including a number of full-page illustrations of sepulchres, one of the heraldic hatching system used).
