Antique print, titled: ‘Fabul XIII Pracht und Herrlichteit macht Niemand gescheider’ – Allegory on pomp and wisdom. Forest animals gather around a throne, with the fox holding up a sceptre and crown for the monkey king. The king, however, is more interested in a bunch of grapes on the floor nearby. Text sheet included. From a series of 20 Fable prints by Ridinger, of which only 16 were published posthumously after 1767. Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Joh. El. Ridinger’ after own design. Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767) was a German painter, engraver, draughtsman and publisher. He is one of the most famous German engravers of animals, in particular horses, hunting scenes and dogs. He was trained in painting by Resch and Falch, and was taught engraving by Georg Philipp Rugendas.
Condition: Very good, given age. Faint dampstain in the lower half of the sheet. Creasing in the right margin (not affecting image). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
