Plate: ‘ The Argonauts pass the Symplegades.’ (Plate is accompanied by text in French, English, German and Dutch under image.) Jason was a late ancient Greek mythological hero, famous as the leader of the Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece. As part of their quest they had to reach Colchis and sail through the Symplegades (Clashing Rocks), huge rock cliffs that came together and crushed anything that traveled between them. Phineas told Jason to release a dove when they approached these islands, and if the dove made it through, to row with all their might. This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: ‘Tafereel, of Beschryving van den prachtigen Tempel der Zang-Godinnen.’ (Translation from Dutch: Scene or description of the magnificent temple of singing godesses. Temple of the Muses.), by Bernard Picart Le Romain and published by H. Chatelain in Amsterdam, 1733.
