Noukahiwa. – Handcoloured plate showing a heavily tattooed figure from Nuku Hiva (or Nukahiva). As there once was a royal family of the same name on the island, this figure may be one of them. Nuku Hiva is the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.

Description

‘Noukahiwa.’

Handcoloured lithograph, heightened with Arabic gum on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 16,7 x 26,1 cm. (6,6 x 10,3 inch). Image size: 11,5 x 19 cm. (4,5 x 7,5 inch).

From the Oceania volume of “Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde” by Auguste Wahlen. This was published in Paris: Poiree, Pilout, Duterte and Martinon, 1844.

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Auguste Wahlen’. Author: Auguste Wahlen. Various artists are responsible for the illustrations, most notably Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert and R. King.

Condition: Good, given age. Faintly browned, and with some small stains. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
