Plaat IV. – This original antique print shows a Miskito native Indian from present day Honduras and Nicaragua on the beach, with another lying prostrate in front of him. A large sailing ship in the background, and a rowing boat filled with travellers nearing the two natives.

Copperplate engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 14,7 x 20,2 cm. Image size: 12,2 x 15,6 cm.

From William Sewel’s Dutch translation of William Dampier’s travel logue: ‘Nieuwe Reistogt rondom de Wereld …’ (A New Voyage Round the World), published in Nijmegen by Isaac van Campen, 1771.

Made by Caspar Luyken after an anonymous artist. Engraver: Caspar Luyken / Luiken (based on monogram C.L. in some of the plates in the originating work). (1672-1708) was a Dutch engraver and draughtsman. He was the son and worked with Jan Luyken (1649-1712). He also worked for Christoph Weigel and Romeyn de Hooghe.

Condition: Very good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
