View of Utrecht in Holland, showing the Old Canal (Oude Gracht) and City Hall. This rare engraving originates from ‘Viaggio in Olanda’, published by I. Carr, Milan, 1820. This is actually a scarse Italian edition of ‘A Tour through Holland, along the right and left banks of the Rhine, to the south of Germany in the summer and autums of 1806’, published in London by Richard Phillips. A quote from the Introduction of this work: ‘A tour made by an Englishman through the country of a belligerent power, where the very name of England is, by the crafty policy of Napolean, proscribed, is so novel as to strike one with surprise at the fortitude of the man who should attempt it. But Sir John, it seems, was determined to incur some risk in the pursuit of fame. and being resolved to visit Holland, he adopted the stratagem of passing for an American, whom he resembled, and whose passport he procured.’ Artists and Engravers: The author of this work Sir John Carr (1772-1832). Carr was a notorious English writer, poet and illustrator, best known for his series of aquatint plate travel books depicting British and Continental views, such as this one of the Rhine. He was Knighted in 1805 and satrized by Walter Scott and others. His work is in the British Museum. Engraver unknown.
