Plate: ‘Vuurlanders.’ (Inhabitants of Terre del Fuego, Argentina, Chili.) Tierra del Fuego, Spanish for ‘Fireland’ or ‘Land of Fire’, is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. This scarse engraved plate originates from: ‘De mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol beschreven door Martinus Suart, afgebeeld door Jacques Kuyper.’, 1st ed. in 6 parts, published by Johannes Allart, Amsterdam, 1802. This famous anthropological work was ‘the first Dutch treatise on geographical anthropology… Quite a few plates are after the travel accounts of Captain Cook, La Pérouse, Carver, Levaillant, etc…’ (Landwehr).Artists and Engravers: Author: Martinus Stuart (Dutch preacher, historian: 1765-1826). Condition: Excellent. General age related toning. Occasional very light staining in margins only. Please study scan.
