Antique print, titled: ‘Celuy la seul est riche qui mesprise les richesses.’ – (‘He alone is rich who despises wealth’). A male figure, holding Hercules’ club, stands with one foot on three putti bathing in gold coins. A crown is also on the ground (discarded riches). Two natives want to crown the central figure, but he refuses the crowns. As a result the figure of Athena behind the central figure hholds a shining crown with laurel wreath over his head (the true wealth of the man who rejects earthly riches). Otto van Veen, also known by his Latinized name Otto Venius or Octavius Vaenius, (c.1556-1629) was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist active primarily in Antwerp and Brussels in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century.

Condition: Good, given age. A few small tears in the lower margin (closed with acid-free archival tape, not nearly affecting image). A tear and some staining in the right margin. A small stain in the middle of the image. A small tear in the top margin (closed with acid-free archival tape). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
