Plate T.XXXIII: ‘Giove in Metallo.’ (Bust of Jupiter in metal.) In ancient Roman religion and myth, Jupiter or Jove was the king of the gods, and the god of sky and thunder. He is the equivalent of Zeus, in the Greek pantheon. He was called Iuppiter (or Diespiter) Optimus Maximus (“Father God the Best and Greatest”). As the patron deity of ancient Rome, he ruled over laws and social order. This scarse original old antique print / engraving / etching originates from: ‘Museum Odescalchum, sive Thesaurus … Christina Suecurum regina ….’, by Niccolo Galeotti / Pietro Santo Bartoli, Rome, Italy, 1751-1752. This is the former gem collection of queen Christina of Sweden, then kept in the collection of the Odescalchi family in Rome.Artists and Engravers: The author / commentary to this work is Niccolo Galeotti (1692-1758). This engraving is engraved by the Perugia, Italy born Pietro Santo Bartoli (1635-1700). He was a student of the French artist Poussin. His nickname was Perugino. He was antiquarian to both the Queen Christina and Benedetto Odescalchi (1611-1689), who became Pope in 1676 under the name of Innocent XI.
