Description

pen and ink, with watercolour and gouache colouring on vellum (parchment) paper.
Sheet size: 32 x 15,5 cm. (12,6 x 6,1 inch). Image size: 31 x 14,5 cm. (12,2 x 5,7 inch).

This item is hard to date, but could very well be a 17th.c. drawing based on an famous etching by Calllot ‘Les Supplices’ (The Punishments), which Callot made before 1630. Ref: Meaune 665; Lieure 1402.

Made by ‘monogram COR.’ after ‘Jacques Callot’. Jacques Callot (Nancy; 1592-1635) was a famous baroque printmaker and draftsman from Lorraine / present day France. He was active in Italy employed by Cosimo II de Medici until 1621. He was very influential and popular with his prints.

Condition: Fair, given age. Overall light soiling. Parchment a bit uneven. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
