Made by ‘Jakob van der Schley’ after ‘Johan Nieuhof’. Jakob van der Schley (Amsterdam 1715-1779) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart and became heavily influenced by his style. Johan Nieuhoff (1618 – 1672) was a Dutch traveler who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2,400 km from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China. He made many drawings of Chinese buildings, animals, plants, towns, rivers, landscapes, people and their costumes.
