Rare Antique Master Print / drawing – PAINTER SEATED-ROME-PROOF – [Fragonard-c.1760]

Print

Gravure retouchée par Fragonard – (Engraving retouched by Fragonard.) A painter seated sketching in front of a curtain with an opening with a peak-through towards Rome and the St. Peter. Next to him painters attributes and a dog. He is leaning on a table with an hourglass. This appears to be an early state etching with ink corrections for a further state. This could very well be a frontispiece design, but we have not been able to find any reference to this image.

Made by ‘Fragonard’ after own design. The ink manuscript addition suggests the involvement of Fragonard and the work is clearly 18th.c. We would appreciate any further insights.

Condition: Good, given age. Light soiling. Several pinholes. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
